2-Factor Authentication

Introduction

2-Factor Authentication, also known as Multifactor Authentication is a feature of Salesforce that pairs a cell phone with a Salesforce account. This is a security measure meant to prevent unauthorized access of one's Salesforce account, and Salesforce has announced that this feature will be required for all users going forward, effective February 2022.

To get started, you'll need to make sure that the Salesforce Authenticator is installed on your device. Below are links to the Apple and Android installations for this app

This feature must be manually turned on by your system administrators before you can pair your device to an account. Coordinate with your system administrators to find the date that this feature will be enabled for you and your team

Once your app is installed, it's time to pair your device with your account. This is a fairly simple process, and we'll walk through it below

Pairing your Device and Enabling Lightning Login

First Time Sign-In

First, proceed to the login screen for our salesforce org and enter your credentials as you normally would. When 2-Factor Authentication has been enabled on your account, you will be greeted with this screen after attempting to sign in. If you've already installed the app, go ahead and open it. You will need the two-word phrase to pair your account with your device. Type the phrase exactly as you see it into the screen shown in the screenshot and now your device will be paired to your account.

Lightning Login Enrollment

1. Enrollment

If you are logging in from a secure location that you regularly work from, it might be a good idea to enroll in Lightning Login. Lightning Login is a feature the Authenticator has that allows you to bypass inputting a password altogether. Instead of a password, you will just have to press the Approve button

This feature will still sometimes require you to type your password in, especially if you are trying to access salesforce from a device that you don't regularly use, but it will save you the trouble of having to enter it every time you sign in to your regular workstation

If you see the screen below when you sign in (it typically appears the first time you sign in after setting up your authenticator), you can enroll at that time. To Enroll, simply click Enroll in Lightning Login

2. Approve the Request

You should receive a notification from the Salesforce Authenticator app that will prompt you to accept your enrollment in Lightning Login. Simply tap Approve and you will be enrolled

After tapping Approve, you should be greeted with this screen. That's it! You're now set up to use Salesforce Authenticator and enrolled in Lightning Login
